Anyone Can Be Cool…But Awesome Takes Practice
Peterson
1988
This illustrates perfectly how a dated title or cover can obscure the content. For all I know this is a great religious book for teens, but I just can’t get past the title!
Want some extra entertainment? There are some hilarious reviews of this book on Amazon.com. Here’s my favorite:
“For years, I struggled with meager coolness until I read this book. Now with my new-found knowledge and my “I am awesome” shirt, all the ladies want to get with me. It may look like they’re just laughing and pointing, but I know that they truly find me irresistible. Since I’ve modeled my hair and clothes from the book cover, everyone thinks I’m Zack from Saved by the Bell. It just doesn’t get anymore awesome than that. Oh yeah.” -Aaron T. Bagby
Thanks, Submitter (who was NOT, by the way, Aaron T. Bagby!)

Mary’s comment: I can’t wait to get home and tell my kids! There is hope for me! I can’t wait to be cool and awesome!

Pity the poor religious publishers who are hopelessly out of touch with teens! Give them a break. They are doing the best they can with their own meager store of coolness.

They seem a lot more in touch these days. At least I hope they are.

As a fan of Chuck, I can say with confidence that the guy on the cover is no Captain Awesome.

Isn’t that John Tesh?

The only person I know who can bring the awesome is my good friend Barney Stinson.

I think the guy who wrote that review must have been wearing his Three Wolf Moon t-shirt.

Perhaps the authors need to read their own book.

There are some really funny reviews on Amazon about this book. In the archive where I work we have all kinds of books like this…but then again it is an ARCHIVE and is documenting American Religion…not a public library with a circulating collection.

This is great, it reminds me of a t-shirt I saw once that read “You can’t spell ‘Awesome’ without ‘Me’.

I think I received that as a birthday gift one year.

Those women/girls are still laughing and pointing.

I got this book as a gift when I was a kid.

It’s John Tesh mixed with Billy Zabka!
I don’t hear the word “cool” as much as used to – you’re more likely to hear “hip” or “amazing” instead.

Back when I used Lorraine Peterson as a pen name!

Oh, dear. I’m a library assistant in a Michigan library system, and I actually sent this out through ILL a few weeks ago. I shared it with my co-workers and we all had a great laugh. I asked the librarian to withdraw it, but she claimed that it she wouldn’t do it because it was still being requested.
