How Maps Are Made
Baynes
1987

Anonymous Submitter:  The title is “How Maps Are Made” and it was published in 1987. At first glance, it looks like a juvenile book because it’s so thin and heavily illustrated. However, it’s actually an adult nonfiction book. I don’t know if that makes it better or worse. All I know is that even with a seriously limited knowledge of cartography it is obviously quite dated (see the Flock of Seagulls/Billy Idol cartographer).  Of course, it could be saved if someone simply tweaked the title with some tape and a magic marker. “How Maps Were Made” would perhaps preserve some usefulness. Then, if I wanted to know how mapmaking was carried out when I was two years old this book would be relevant.”

Cartography is cool.

Women Law
Hemphill
1981

These were great titles once upon a time!  I would say that divorce/separation info as well as other general legal matters is one of the most common reasons to visit a public library.  Legal information has certainly changed since these lovely books were published.  Not helpful folks!  This needs to be weeded!

I have got to get one of those great tape decks. Duran Duran sounds so much better when you are hanging out with guys in short shorts.

gary coleman

Gary Coleman: Medical Miracle
Coleman Family and Bill Davidson
1981

How about another biography?  Gary Coleman is now 41 years old.  This book is about his life up to age 13. Sure, he defied the odds and was insanely popular when I was in elementary school.  He was an inspiration to children facing kidney disease.

I can’t speak for all libraries, but my public library would pass on this book to make space for something more current.  If Gary Coleman writes a new biography and includes his run for governor of California, how he sued his parents for messing up his trust fund, his 1998 assault charge, and his appearance on Divorce Court TV, I’ll buy a copy!

Mind Pump: The Pyschology of Body Building
Kubistant
1988

My awesome LIS intern Lauren found this gem in our own collection.  (Is there anyway I can blame this on Holly? hmmmm) It has had 3 circs since 1995. I think Lauren just wanted to weed this so she could slap down a quarter in the resale room and grab this for herself.    I think we can do better in the currency department. Great hair though.

Driving
How to get a license (and keep it!)
Olney
1974

The top book almost crumbled in my hand.  The second book needs a new wrapper.  So already we are full of condition criteria for these two books.  I think goes without saying that the information in these two lovely books is a bit out of date.  I especially like the charts for speed limits in all the states in the Olney title.   (btw, is that lady in the top picture wearing saddle shoes?)
I would have asked for commentary from my auto engineer husband but I was afraid he would answer in great detail (complete with charts and graphs) on WHY it is outdated.   Frankly, none of us have that kind of time.

A Handbook for Emergencies: Coming out Alive
Greenbank
1976

Having had a few CPR and first aid classes, I do know this information does need updating from time to time.  What about the other stuff?  Does the kind of stuff in survival training need updating?  Not that avalanches are a much of a problem in the midwest, but now I am concerned.

Do you think the book tells you how to crouch in fear from the snake as in the picture in the lower left corner?

Charlie Rich
Rock’n Pop Stars
Eron
1975

Thanks to an anonymous submitter we have another cool biography.  Isn’t this an awesome looking cover?  Be honest, how many of you had to google Charlie Rich?  Since I grew up in central Illinois where there are quite a few country music fans, Charlie Rich was on my radar as a teenager, but he was more my parents cup of tea.  Still, I suppose maybe a few kids would be anxious to read the details about the “Silver Fox.”  He was hardly on the level of a Mylie Cyrus or a Jonas Brother.

Take a look at these awesome shots!  I especially like where the Charlie’s head is replaced by a fox’s head - or did a fox eat his head?   Okay, bring on the nightmares!

I think we can assume that Charlie’s days as a youth biography choice are long gone.

Weed that book!

Pat Boone: Ultra cool!

October 26, 2009 · 11 Comments

Pat Boone1

Get Your Life Together
Pat Boone
1975

Doesn’t Pat Boone look sweet in his green leisure suit?  Ok, it’s probably just a jogging suit, but he does look very 70’s.  Nice haircut, too.

Fun Fact: Pat Boone once lived next door to Ozzy Osbourne.  It was Ozzy’s job to clean the dog “leavings” out of the back yard, and he routinely threw it over the fence into the neighbor’s yard.  As it turns out, Ozzy is a huge fan of Pat Boone’s, and felt so bad about it when he learned who lived next door that he fessed up and apologized to Boone.  The real funny part of this story? That Ozzy Osbourne is a huge fan of Pat Boone.

Fun Fact #2: In 1997, Pat Boone released a heavy metal cover album. I’ll stick with Dee Snider.

None of these fun facts are in this book, though!
